Day 18 - Gratitude Challenge 2021

It's easy to be grateful for and show gratitude to the people who are always around us like family and friends. But, how often do we show gratitude for those occasional people we encounter - people who aren't a regular part of our lives? A delivery person, a cashier, the garbage person, a neighbor we don't know well, or even a with a less than perfect background all deserve gratitude. People with not-so-glamorous jobs deserve our gratitude because they help keep the world going.

Today, there was another ice storm. My street, the sidewalks, powerlines, just about everything was covered in ice. It was quiet for most of the morning until I heard a sound resembling scraping. It was a snowplow coming through to clear the streets. Shortly after, I heard loud beeping and noticed the recycling crew had arrived for the weekly pickup. The mail person, trekked through icy sidewalks to drop people's mail. A delivery person, dropped my groceries, as expected, without any delay.

What all of these people had in common was that their jobs are not the most sought-after jobs but their jobs are necessary. They don't have the luxury of working in an office or from their homes like many of us in the world. As the groceries were brought into the house, I began to simply say how thankful I was for the service as I didn't have to drive in the bad weather conditions. If my garbage and recycling were not picked-up, there would surely be a rodent problem in the neighborhood. You get the point!

I realized that these people, though not family or friends, are an essential part of my life and I shouldn't take for granted that they are there when I need them. For these people, I am truly grateful as they make my life easier and convenient. These people work hard and take on the messy roles that others in society don't always appreciate.

I am grateful for their presence!
