Gratitude doesn’t always come easily because our flesh doesn’t like to line up with the truth. But as we bring our flesh into alignment with the truth, the practice of gratitude will change our perspective. Think, for example, the last time that you received a compliment, a promotion, a good grade, or a simple (physical) gift. How did you respond? Did you think that you deserved it because it was the result of your actions? Or, did you take a step back and truly thank the giver regardless of your feelings about deserving whatever you received?
It is worth celebrating accomplishments, but, in celebrating, we must also turn our attention to the giver. Doing so doesn't diminish our moment at all but merely highlights that no one does anything completely alone. There is always some help - even small - along the path that led us to our celebratory moment.
Today, I'm choosing to look at the givers - along with God - as part of the source of my accomplishments. Today, I'm remembering to give honor, also, to those people or situations that helped and supported me even the smallest amount. For it is in showing gratitude for the smallest things that we can learn true heartfelt gratitude, as what may seem small to us could have been a great sacrifice for another.
